The status of religious cults

sainte Genevieve church

Religious status, inherited from the 1801 treaty, is a particularity of local law. Four cults are recognised by the State: three Christian communities (Lutheran, Catholic and Reformed), and the Jewish community. Churches still have an official status. The State pays ministers of the Church and is involved in their appointment. This particularity gives Alsace two specific holidays, Holy Friday and December 26th (Saint-Etienne).

Mostly Protestant until the 19th century, Mulhouse is now mostly Catholic, due to the influx of workers linked to the city's industrial development.

Religious instruction is a mandatory subject in public schools, even though, in practice, parents are free to choose for their children to take it or not.

Another particularity is the organisation of graveyards, which should, theoretically, be confessional (like the Mulhouse central graveyard), even though new graveyards are usually mixed, like the Northern Cemetery of Bourtzwiller.
